The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
